Google suggests this rhythm itself in its beginner’s guide to Search Console: check in about once a month and after content changes, and the tool will email you about urgent problems. Or rather, in how empty it has become. Google’s help page about Search Console describes the tool as a free service for monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting your site’s presence in search results. Logging in every day? A waste of time. Urgent issues will reach you by email anyway. The monthly review is for spotting trends, not for firefighting. Outside this rhythm, check it after a migration, a theme change, a menu rebuild or a change to your URL structure (in other words, any time someone “just tweaked something”).

Performance report: how to read clicks, impressions and position

This is where you see which queries your site shows up for, how many times people clicked it and what its average position is. The report is built on four metrics:

Clicks - visits to your site from search results.

Impressions - times your URL appeared in results, even if nobody scrolled down to it.

CTR - the share of impressions that ended in a click.

Average position - your page’s average ranking in results for the given queries.

Compare the last month or quarter with the previous one. In a seasonal business, compare year over year, or December will always look like either a disaster or a miracle. What should you look for? Queries with lots of impressions and a poor CTR, because that is where the title and description need work. And pages that have lost clicks. Queries with a city name will show you how your business ranks in local results. Filters narrow down the rest: search type, country, device.

Pages report: Google indexing and the most common errors

The Pages report (formerly Coverage) tells you which URLs Google has indexed, which it has skipped and why. On the chart, watch the trend in indexed pages and any sudden jumps in non-indexed ones. Below it you will find the statuses. These are the ones you will see most often:

Not found (404),

Server error (5xx),

Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag,

Page with redirect,

Duplicate without user-selected canonical,

Crawled - currently not indexed.

Relax, not every indexing error is a reason to panic. Redirects from old URLs or noindex on the cart page are perfectly normal. But noindex on a service page? Or a server error on an important page? Now that’s an alarm. Once it’s fixed, run the URL through the URL Inspection tool, and in the report click Validate fix.

Sitemaps: does Google see your current list of URLs

This report answers two questions: can your submitted sitemap be read without errors, and when did Google last fetch it. You don’t have to submit a sitemap. According to Google, though, it can help your pages get discovered faster, and it also lets you see what state the sitemap is in. Check three things: the Success status, the last read date, and the number of discovered URLs compared with how many pages you actually have. A mismatch in WordPress? In practice, the usual culprit is an SEO plugin that adds tags, attachments or noindex pages to the sitemap.

Core Web Vitals and HTTPS: speed and connection security

The Core Web Vitals report sorts URLs into Good, Needs improvement and Poor, separately for mobile and desktop. There are three abbreviations to remember. LCP measures how fast the largest visible element on the screen loads. INP measures how quickly the page responds to clicks and taps. CLS measures whether the layout jumps around while loading (we have all clicked the wrong button because something moved). The data comes from real users, so changes show up with a delay and there’s no point reacting to one bad day. When a whole group of URLs drops to Poor, it’s time to improve your Core Web Vitals, starting with what will have the biggest impact. Next to it is the HTTPS report, which confirms whether all your pages are served over a secure connection.

Manual actions and security issues

This section should be empty. Any entry here needs attention now, not next week. A manual action is a penalty applied by a Google employee, for example for unnatural links or spam. You remove the cause, then submit a reconsideration request. Security issues, on the other hand, signal a hack, malware or an infected plugin, so call your hosting administrator right away. The Links report and the structured data enhancement reports? A quick glance is enough.

Monthly Search Console checklist, step by step

The whole review fits into a few steps. The same ones every month, in the same order:

Performance - compare periods and list queries to improve.

Pages - new errors and changes in the indexing trend.

Sitemaps - status and last read date.

Core Web Vitals and HTTPS.

Manual actions and Security.

A note with conclusions and tasks for next month.

I also recommend writing down the dates of publications, migrations and theme changes. Without them, six months from now nobody will be able to say where that dip in the chart came from. And if errors keep coming back or traffic drops for no obvious reason, a DIY review is no longer enough. That’s when you need a technical SEO audit of your site, and for longer-term visibility work, professional website positioning services.

Read regularly, Google Search Console stops being a collection of charts and becomes a concrete to-do list. One hour once a month. That’s enough to make sure no problem grows quietly.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you check Google Search Console?

u003cpu003eOnce a month and after every major change to your site, such as a migration or a new theme.
